No Pearly Gates, No Thorny Crown: “American Gods” Gets Back on the Road with Season 2 Trailer

It’s been nearly two years since Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel was adapted for a breathtaking (and sometimes off-book) television adaptation. A lot has changed in that time, too, with multiple show runners and cast members checking out between seasons.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, who served as the first season’s show runners, stepped away and were replaced by Jesse Alexander. His oversight remains unknown since he was allegedly asked to step away as well. Gillian Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth both left their roles with Fuller’s departure, leaving new god Media and old god Easter to be recast. (Media is now played by Kahyun Kim; Easter’s recast is still to be determined.)

With the show returning to Starz in mid-March, it was high time for trailer to drop and the results are stunning. Shadow and Mr. Wednesday’s trip to the House on the Rock continues, with more old gods to be revealed and familiar faces popping up, including Mr. Nancy, Bilquis, Mr. Ibis, Mad Sweeney, and the addition of Mama-Ji, housekeeper at Motel America and represents the Hindu goddess Kali.

The new gods are back too, with Mr. World employing Mr. Town to figure out what Mr. Wednesday is up to, and Technical Boy on the trail of New Media.

And then there’s House on the Rock, sure to be the real star of this season in all its gaudy other-worldliness full of floating mannequin angels atop a gigantic carousel. Is this was heaven or hell looks like?

Mr. Wednesday intones that America is the greatest story ever told, but we’ll see if they return to the book’s stories and impending showdown between the gods or if we’ll be off road again. I’m praying we’ll ‘See Rock City’ yet.
