Deadwood Movie to Air May 31: Watch the New Trailer

It’s not quite at a Twin-Peaks-25-years-later level of waiting, but we will be treated to new material for HBO’s fantastic Western drama Deadwood. The Deadwood movie will debut on HBO Friday, May 31, at 8 pm Eastern—almost 13 years after we last laid eyes on a new Deadwood episode.

The cast will look very familiar, with returning cast members including Ian McShane (who in the trailer below amazingly still looks exactly like Al Swearengen did 12 years ago), Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens, Gerald McRaney, Sean Bridgers, W. Earl Brown, and Keone Young, among others.

Most importantly, it will be written by David Milch, whose dialog style in the original series is unmatched in any other show. Rumors of this movie bounced around for years, after HBO unfortunately canceled the series after three seasons. The third season ended with a bit of a disappointment, with no big showdown between Swearengen and his rival Hearst. It hurt to be cut off from the show after a whimper of a season finale.

I wish we were given a fourth season to fully wrap things up. Among many other reasons, the theater troupe story line could have been more fleshed out. I doubt we’ll see much of a return to this portion of the story in the Deadwood movie, as there will be more important things to address. But at least we’ll now finally get a proper conclusion.

This was one of the best TV shows ever made. I can’t wait to see how things end up for Bullock, Swearengen, Calamity Jane, and company in the Deadwood movie. But no matter how these characters’ stories play out, I’m sure it’ll still be a treat just to be back in the world of Deadwood. Even if it’ll only be for a couple of hours.
