Cooper Dooper: A Twin Peaks Podcast for Regular People

John: The Cooper Dooper podcast made it to the killer reveal episode of Twin Peaks with this week’s episode “You’re Going Back to Missoula Montana.”

The show’s tagline is “A Twin Peaks Podcast for Regular People,” but just because it doesn’t head deep down continuity or theory rabbit holes doesn’t mean they go light on other things. Every week, we get a thorough exploration of themes in a clear way as they suss it from the plots the hosts are recapping. The hosts are Jessica Bluemke Greiff and Mikey Greiff, a husband and wife team in the Chicagoland area (so I get bonus peppering of my childhood home when they talk about their lives outside podcasting).

Mikey is the longtime fan who watched the show when it first aired, and who I found out this episode shared my particular fear of mirrors. Jessica has also watched the show but she’s less involved. Together they make a really down to earth team that makes me feel like I know them.

Usually their episodes are right around an hour, but this one’s two and a half hours thanks to the depth of this week’s episode.

The hosts started by talking about the hallmarks of a Lynch-directed episode—liking James and Donna for one—before going through the Log Lady intro.

They brought up the theme of how nothing important happens until the characters have their coffee, discussed the patience of Lynch’s shots, and took a detour over what makes a marriage for Shelly. They also took some time to talk about Ben’s fall in terms of people where empathy isn’t required in their lives. Then they look into Norma’s state of mind, how Pete reacted to Tojamura, and how the Roadhouse scene was recreating reactions from the Pilot.

They ponder the killer’s culpability, compliment the actor’s ability to smile with dead eyes, and dig into Lynch’s relationship with ambiguity. This last part was particularly fun to hear, as they dueled with whether Lynch explored without an answer himself, or if deep down he knew what things meant to him (and of course because they’re lovely hosts they don’t presume to know the answer either way).

I’m summarizing quickly because I don’t want to recap their show, more so give you an impression of the sorts of things they look at. I’d rather you take a look at their show yourself to hear how it all shakes out. I’ve got a good feeling you’ll like it.
