Hey, look, it’s Kurt Loder! Showtime has released a promo for Yellowjackets in the style of an MTV News brief, and I have to say the whole thing is perfect. You may be thinking that it’s kind of weird to ask the public for information about what happened to a group that was clearly in a plane crash, but as a child of the 1990s I can attest: I am pretty sure MTV News did stuff like this!

The ‘90s were weird.

The segment includes mention of a website one can go to in order to give tips. I’m not entirely sure this fits with 1996 (it seems a bit early for that), but the style of the site certainly does. And, again, this would be an odd thing to do but bear in mind the World Wide Web was just getting going in 1996 and everyone was still trying to figure out what to do with it.

There isn’t a ton to discover if you go to the URL, but there is a button you can push and when you do you ultimately see this:

Which is pretty cool! And, though the site doesn’t exactly give us as much to play with as, say, thesearchforthezone.com did for Twin Peaks: The Return, since it exists we’ll have to frequently check back and see if anything more shows up. Good times!

If you discover something of interest on https://www.wherearetheyellowjackets.com/ please post about it here in the comments below. If you hear it… first.

Also of note is the mention that the following segment will be about Mad Cow disease. That’s timely to 1996, when this was indeed a big deal and fear for a hot minute. It spread to humans! Also, fun fact: cows get Mad Cow from eating other cows! So there’s some thematic resonance for you.

And then there is a plug for an upcoming segment on Alanis Morissette, which does a great job of bringing home the kind of tonal whiplash MTV News used to subject us to on a regular basis.

Good job everyone! (And yes I noticed the subliminal message.)

  1. Kurt Loder has said on Twitter that this is a deepfake. I was maybe a bit quick to accept it and be excited by the premise instead of questioning how they did it. I was thinking de-aging, I guess. Anyway, wanted to acknowledge. If they made this without his permission and without paying him I find it deeply unethical and disturbing. That would be a different kind of article. Still stoked for Yellowjackets!

  2. Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” promo in the style of MTV News with Kurt Loder is a nostalgic and clever marketing move that brilliantly captures the essence of the show’s ’90s timeline. It adds an extra layer of intrigue for fans and highlights the series’ unique blend of mystery and nostalgia. A creative nod to both the era and the suspenseful storytelling!
