On Lady in the Lake S1E1, “Did you know Seahorses are fish?” & S1E2, “It Has to Do With the Search for the Marvelous.” (written and directed by Alma Har’el)
During a Thanksgiving Day Parade in Baltimore in 1967, a young Jewish girl goes missing, and much of the city jumps into action to save her. One of those is Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), who leaves her husband and son, frustrated by what her life has become as a housewife. She moves to The Bottom, the Black area of Baltimore. With the help of a friend, she discovers the body of the young girl which leads to her initially being named a suspect before an employee of a pet store is arrested for the murder. She also begins an affair with a Black police officer and starts dreaming of being a journalist again.
At the same time, Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) is working multiple jobs (including keeping the books for a crime lord/club owner Shell Gordon) just so she can feed her two boys and try and keep them safe. Gordon does not like that Cleo is also volunteering with Myrtle Summer, a local Black activist, and offers her an ultimatum, saying that Cleo can have a bigger role with him if she can prove her loyalty. She makes a money delivery to some local thugs, and they force her to ride along with them as they go to Myrtle Summer’s house and attempt to murder her. She runs away, trying to flee the scene.
