On Lady in the Lake Episode 4, “Innocence leaves when you discover cruelty. First in others, then in yourself.”
Maddie meets with Stephan in the hospital where he is being held and learns he was part of experiments known as Operation Whitecoat where the military would send conscientious objectors. While there she has flashbacks of Allan forcing himself on her when they were young. She takes the information to the Baltimore Sun that runs a story about it, casting doubt that Stephan was Tessie’s killer (and Maddie gets a new full time job). At a Hanukkah party, Allan confronts Maddie about getting involved in the investigation of their daughter’s murder. Later, Stephan escapes the hospital and confronts Maddie in her apartment before going into the lake where police capture him.
Platt and his partner pursue Duke, who was responsible for trying to assassinate Myrtle Summer. Duke shoots and kills his partner, while Platt shoots and injures Duke, prompting him to get recommended for homicide detective.
Cleo begins to put the Numbers Game plan into action, trying to get Dora and others to get out of town with her. She convinces Lucille to bet on number 366 on Christmas Eve so she can collect the money for Cleo and keep 20% for herself. Shell Gordon learns Reggie asked Cleo to do the drop at the Summers, so he tasks Reggie with killing her before Christmas to tie up loose ends. Cleo gets the money from her bet and Reggie tricks her into meeting him. He appears to kill her and dumps her body in the lake the same time Stephan shows up.
