On Lady in the Lake Episode 5, “Every time someone turns up dead in that lake, it does seem to lead to you.”
In 1946, Maddie and Allan’s father, Hal, have a secret affair, and he then pressures her to get an abortion.
In 1967, Milton meets Maddie at the Silver Dollar Diner and tells her he wants a divorce on the grounds of abandonment and that Maddie should not reach out to Seth anymore.
Cleo’s body is discovered by city workers in the fountain out in the lake because Maddie responded to a letter she received at the Baltimore Star from “Bill Smith” about lights being out at the lake. She pretends she doesn’t have the letter so she can begin investigating Cleo’s murder. Maddie tries to get information from The Afro about Cleo, but they want nothing to do with her or The Star.
At Cleo’s funeral, her husband Slappy causes a scene and gets kicked out. Maddie follows him and learns about Lucille and the bet from Christmas Eve. Maddie confronts Shell Gordon about the numbers game and Cleo and then learns Cleo was modeling the dress she bought on Thanksgiving.
Maddie talks to Stephan on the phone. She asks him about Cleo’s death but he knows nothing about it. Maddie then visits his mother looking for help to exonerate Stephan, but she becomes furious and attacks Maddie, stabbing her before cutting her own throat and dying.
