On Lady in the Lake Episode 6, “I know who killed Cleo Johnson”
Maddie is recovering in the hospital after the end of the last episode when Stephan’s mother stabbed her before taking her own life. Maddie begins having various visions. These visions include giving birth to a baby Cleo steals, walking through a flooded hospital, a Thomas Crown Affair-like meeting with dozens of women in blue coats, herself floating dead in the lake, a dance number to “Me and My Shadow”, her own funeral, and a crowd of people cheering on Cleo while “The Impossible Dream” plays.
In a flashback, Maddie and Allan confront each other about her relationship with Hal Durst. Allan doesn’t understand why Maddie would be in love with his dad and not be intimate with him. They do end up having sex, raising the possibility that Allan is Seth’s father.
Reggie frames Slappy for Cleo’s murder, and Slappy is arrested. Reggie feels bad about this and tries to give Teddy—Cleo and Slappy’s son—some money and groceries. Meanwhile, Officer Platt visits Shell and Reggie, and he interrogates them about Cleo’s murder. Shell turns it into a conversation about how Black men need to be helping one another instead of accusing one another of things like murder.
During the middle of an NSRP white power rally, Platt is asked to go visit with Captain Stassey and Bosko. Bosko confronts Platt about the Black community always trying to be the victim and that he knows about the affair between Maddie and Platt. He threatens to put Maddie in jail and get Platt fired.
At the end of the episode, Maddie appears to be waking up from her dreams and visions and sees a cleaning lady in her hospital room. That cleaning lady is Cleo Johnson and it appears she has come to find Maddie for some specific reason.
