Created by: Paul Attanasio

Based on: Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon

Seven seasons: January 31, 1993 – May 21, 1999

The first season introduces the audience to a team of detectives working in Baltimore PD’s Homicide Division. A veteran group of detectives and their captain welcome rookie homicide detective Tim Bayliss to the squad and give him a high-profile murder (Adena Watson) as his first case. Other cases appear from episode to episode in the first three including a cold case about a woman run over by a car, a wife murdering her husband to collect insurance, and an elderly woman who wants her husband to die.

  • Is this the same Detective Munch? Signs point to yes
  • David Simon’s book and connections to The Wire
  • Andre Braugher’s breakthrough performance
  • “Bleak realism” and de-mythologizing police detectives
  • Novelty of the show’s structure and its place in TV history
