On the Premiere of Disclaimer (I & II)
Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett), a successful and award-winning documentarian, has her world turned upside down when a book, A Perfect Stranger, arrives at her house, which tells a story about her and an affair she had with a young man named Jonathan while on holiday, and how he ended up dead. Her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) also receives the book and explicit photos at work and confronts Catherine about the events. Their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee), an aimless young man who hates his mother, also receives the book but does not know who it is about.
The affair and subsequent death of Jonathan (Louis Partridge) devastated the lives of his parents Nancy (Lesley Manville) and Stephen (Kevin Kline). After Nancy’s death due to cancer, Stephen is fired from his teaching job and vows revenge on Catherine after he finds the book his wife wrote. Stephen is the one who sent copies of A Perfect Stranger and delivered the photos in an attempt to destroy Catherine’s life.
