On Disclaimer III & IV
In Italy, Catherine and Jonathan’s relationship becomes extremely intimate for a day before Jonathan tell Catherine he wants to come back to London with her and start a relationship. Catherine tells him that can’t happen, leading to a rift between them.
While separated, Catherine falls asleep on the beach and Nicholas takes his small boat into the ocean, drifting far away. Jonathan sees him and is able to help rescue Nicholas, but drowns while trying to bring him back to shore. Catherine walks away as if she never knew him.
Some time later, Stephen and Nancy are still grief-stricken after going to Italy to identify Jonathan’s body, leading Nancy to try and see what drowning feels like in her tub, she moves into Jonathan’s room permanently, and eventually is diagnosed with cancer.
In the present timeline, Catherine is reeling from Robert discovering her affair. She tracks down and calls Stephen, leaving a voicemail that she hopes will assuage the situation and hopefully encourage Stephen to leave her alone. Catherine discovers her favorite bookstore has been selling many copies of A Perfect Stranger.
She also attempts to reconcile with Robert, but he packs a bag for her, calls a cab, and tells her to leave.
