The following recap contains spoilers for Somebody Somewhere S3E3, “Porch Lyfe” (written by Lennon Parham and directed by Robert Cohen)
Somebody Somewhere S3E3 begins with Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) trying on outfits with Sam (Bridget Everett) in tow. It turns out that Tricia has joined the local country club, which Sam scoffs at, but she isn’t mean about it.
Tricia hears Sam wince and insists that she see Dr. Weis (Paula Anglin) about her knee. Sam resists, noting that their sister Holly was fine when she went to see Dr. Weis but left with cancer. That isn’t really rational, of course, but the reaction makes a kind of emotional sense. Holly’s death has haunted Somebody Somewhere since the beginning. It sits in the background as Sam tries to figure out how to live.
So, Sam relents and goes to the doctor, who gives her a gentle hard time about not having been in for over ten years, and who will ultimately tells her by phone that she needs to make some lifestyle changes. Also, that pain in her knee is arthritis.
When Sam calls Tricia after receiving this news, Tricia is too excited about meeting Mitch Green (Torrey Hanson) at the country club to be receptive. Mitch is apparently a very wealthy philanthropist, and he’s taken Tricia up on her offer to plan events for him. So she’s excited about that and asks to catch up with Sam later.
“Porch Lyfe”
It’s not until the end of “Porch Lyfe” that Sam gets the chance to express how she’s been feeling to someone. As she and Joel (Jeff Hiller) eat donuts after Joel’s visit to the bar where Sam works, Sam unburdens herself. Brad’s (Tim Bagley) offer of financial assistance embarrassed her, and she wishes Joel wouldn’t talk to Brad about her problems. Dr. Weis made her feel bad about herself, and she doesn’t need other people doing that when she does a good enough job at it herself. And Susan (Jennifer Mudge) told her she was bringing Fred (Murray Hill) down.
Thankfully, Joel remains the best friend you could hope for, as he tells Sam nothing is wrong with her, and the episode ends with the pair laughing and cursing Susan. For at least a moment, Sam feels better about herself, and it’s great to see her and Joel connecting like old times.

It also feels like some romance might be brewing between Sam and the Icelandic guy who’s renting the family farm (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), even if she’s not sure what his name is—or how to pronounce it, since it’s presumably on those rent checks. After learning that Sam works at the bar where he sometimes has a single beer, Icelandic guy comes back to drop off one of those rent checks for her, but doesn’t even stay for a beer that time. This feels like one of those situations where being awkward around one another is taking the place of flirtation, so I’m curious to see where it goes.
As for Sam’s parents (and why the farm is available to be rented), S3E3 gives us the information through Dr. Weis that they’ve moved to Texas. I guess this means that MJ (Jane Brody) will also be absent from Somebody Somewhere Season 3. Fair enough.
See you next week.
