On Black Mirror S7E5, “Eulogy”
Written by Charlie Brooker and Ella Road, Directed by Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor
A single, middle-aged man named Philip learns from a company called Eulogy that his ex-girlfriend Carol from long ago has passed away, and the family is looking for people who have photos to contribute to the memorial.
Philip initially says he only has a couple, but eventually reveals that he has many, and he has obscured or ruined Carol’s face in all of them. Eulogy says their technology can let him enter the photos and remember better what was in them and what Carol looked like in each moment. A female named The Guide leads Philip through these photos, where we learn how Philip and Carol met, their long relationship, and eventually Philip’s infidelity when Carol went to London for work.
Philip also has a photograph from the trip to London, where he proposed to Carol, but she didn’t respond, because Carol was pregnant with a daughter, who turns out to be The Guide, after sleeping with someone to get back at Philip.
Philip finds a camera from that London trip that has a photo of the hotel room he trashed after Carol walked out on him. In that photo, Philip sees a letter Carol wrote saying that she wanted forgiveness and to be with Philip, asking him to meet her if he felt the same.
Philip is filled with guilt and regret that he never knew about the letter, so he goes to Carol’s funeral, where he sees her daughter playing the cello and other guests wearing the Eulogy technology.
