On Black Mirror S7E6, “USS Callister: Into Infinity”
Written by Charlie Brooker, Bisha K. Ali, William Bridges & Bekka Bowling, Directed by Toby Haynes
The digital USS Callister crew are still stuck in the Infinity game with Nanette’s clone Nan as captain and now have to survive in a universe where players are out to kill them and they have to steal credits to stay alive. They come up with an idea to create their own private universe, similar to what Robert Daly did in USS Callister.
To do this, they need Walton’s clone (Walt, who respawned in the game) to get them into the Heart of Infinity so they can manipulate the source code. They find him living alone on a planet and bring him back to their ship.
In the real world, reporters are asking questions about rogue players who are stealing and the digital cloning tech Robert had in his apartment when he died. This leads Walton and Nanette to enter the game and try to get rid of the clones.
Walton leads them to the heart of infinity where they find a clone of Robert that was created by Walton when they were building the game. Robert offers Nan a choice to merge herself with the real-life Nanette, who was hit by a car and is in a coma or stay with the crew and move to a private server. When Nan wants the private server, but not to stay with Robert, he gets upset and attacks her.
Nan kills Robert which causes the game to self-destruct and merges the crew with Nanette’s consciousness. Infinity is destroyed, Walton is arrested, and Nan gets to live in the real world with the digital crew experiencing it with her.
