On Murderbot S1E4, “Escape Velocity Protocol”
Written by Chris Weitz & Paul Weitz and directed by Toa Fraser
Episode 4 opens in a factory where workers, who seem to be indentured servants, build SecUnits. Each has a different face, which makes it easier to track if they “go rogue,” which is apparently something that happens regularly. These workers create parts from flash and metal and are encouraged to “take pride” in their work.
Picking up on the cliffhanger from Episode 3, Murderbot is dragged down a hallway by the bot who shot him and attempts to insert a combat override module into Murderbot before it can regain its capabilities. Despite putting up a fight, the bot inserts the module into Murderbot, which means it will lose all control in 10 minutes.
The Preservation Alliance did not leave as Murderbot requested, so Mensah arrives and attacks the unnamed bot from behind. Ratthi also arrives to try and help, although he knows next to nothing about guns and combat. What finally kills the enemy bot is Pin-Lee and Arada flying the hopper and landing it on the bot.
Even though Murderbot is able to remove the module, the damage has been done and is unavoidable, so it grabs Ratthi’s gun and shoots itself.
