The following recap contains spoilers for Invasion S3E5, “Point of No Return” (written by Donald Joh and directed by Daisy von Sherler Mayer)

Invasion S3E5 opens with Trevante (Shamier Anderson) and Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna) waking up in the helicopter that was downed at the end of last week’s episode. Some of the soldiers accompanying them are also alive, while a couple are dead. Mitsuki senses that there are 10 to 12 aliens approaching, so the soldiers start firing on the aliens while signaling to Hollander (Eric Lange) that they need the other helicopter to pick them up.

That doesn’t work, however. The second chopper is able to land but quickly goes dead, perhaps due to proximity to the alien mothership. Trev has one of his headache attacks, regaining some more memories of his time on the mothership with Caspar (Billy Barratt), but these don’t really provide us with any meaningful information. The attack does, however, hold up the group that is trying to escape the aliens, and a soldier dies.

Mitsuki grabs an alien tentacle and is instantly connected to the alien network, which makes the hunter-killer nearest to the group freeze. The soldiers shoot it, and the group is able to get away, though Mitsuki is now unconscious. With no other option, Hollander orders everyone to march to the airport. I guess his plan is to get new choppers and try again.

Along the way, Mitsuki has a seizure, which leads Nikhil (Shane Zaza) to stick her with the device he’s made to cut her off from alien communication (which she’d explicitly rejected last week). Mitsuki is mad about this when she wakes up, but Nikhil arguably has a point that it’s better for her to be angry at him than dead.

Meanwhile, Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani), Clark (Enver Gjokaj), and Jamila (India Brown) arrive at a house in Washington, along with Verna (Erika Alexander) and the gang. Aneesha wants to know where they are, but Verna notes that she probably shouldn’t tell them if they want to go home. Yet, when they note that home is Boise, and the Infinitas group shows them the news that aliens have taken over a swath of territory across the Pacific Northwest, Aneesha and Clark immediately know they’ve been cut off from home, even though they putatively don’t know where they are.

Jamila overhears a transmission from a scout Infinitas has in the dead zone and learns that there is a new kind of threat emerging. Since Verna has also told her that Trev is on a mission to the dead zone, Jamila insists that they have to get a warning to the WDC (even though you’ll recall that Trev himself has been talking about a new kind of alien threat since the season premiere, and Infinitas doesn’t seem to have any new information beyond that).

Aneesha and Clark plot an escape, and Verna catches Aneesha trying to take a truck. She insists that Aneesha and Clark are free to go, but suggests they’ll be better off coming with the group to an airport, from which they’ll be able to fly. Since that’s a better plan than driving through alien-occupied territory, Aneesha agrees.

It turns out that Infinitas is going to the same airport that Trev et al. have been marching to, which brings the two story threads together for the closing scenes of S3E5. Verna asks to use the WDC’s antenna to boost her signal, so Hollander takes her into the office, where Verna makes contact with her scout.

Meanwhile, Trev notices that there are snipers on the roof of the building. Verna slits Hollander’s throat, and the snipers start firing on the soldiers below. Trev manages to get Jamila, Aneesha, and Clark onto a chopper, along with various soldiers. Joel (Ashton Sanders) tries to throw a grenade onto the chopper, but Trev manages to tackle him and throw the grenade out of the back hatch. However, Joel himself will be along for the ride.

I’m not sure how much sense it makes for Infinitas to ambush the WDC, in part because I’m not sure how they knew the relevant parties would be at that airfield. Further, the motivations of the group remain a bit unclear. It’s one thing to take issue with how the government is concealing information about the alien threat; it’s another thing to sabotage the government’s efforts to fight that alien threat. Are they on the side of the aliens? I hope we’ll get some more insight as Invasion proceeds.

See you next week.
