In Derry, Maine, in January 1962, Matty Clements is chased out of a movie theater and asks a family to take him out of Derry. The family begins behaving strangely and the woman gives birth to a mutant baby who attacks Matty.
Four months later, Major Leroy Hanlon and Captain Russo arrive at the Derry Air Force base and immediately encounter some of the local racism. At night, Hanlon is ambushed by masked men who demand plans for the B-52 bomber, and is saved by Russo.
Lilly Bainbridge has a vision of Matty singing a song and sees his bloody fingers from her bathtub; Lilly tells the vision to her friends Marge, Teddy, and Phil, but no one believes her.
Teddy begins to believe after he has a vision of a human lampshade screaming at him. Lilly, Teddy, Phil, and Phil’s sister Susie search for information on Matty’s disappearance and reach out to Ronnie, who saw Matty at the movie theater the night he disappeared. She shares that she has also heard voices coming from the sewers outside the movie theater, singing the same song as Matty.
The group goes back to the movie theater to watch The Music Man in search of answers, and in the movie, they see Matty. He blames them for his disappearance before releasing the mutant baby, which kills everyone except Lilly and Ronnie.
