A signal from space is detected and is found to be an RNA sequence. Scientists reproduce it in rats, but when one bites a scientist, an outbreak occurs, spreading a hive mind virus throughout humanity.

In Albuquerque, fantasy romance author Carol Sturka finishes up a book tour with her manager and partner, Helen. When they are out one night, Helen and everyone around Carol convulses and collapses. As she takes Helen to the hospital, Carol learns everyone is overrun with this mysterious condition.

Back at her house, someone from the White House appears on her TV screen and tells her everyone has been assimilated, except for a dozen people who are like Carol, but the goal is to eventually have everyone included.

While burying Helen, Carol is visited by Zosia, a member of the hive mind sent to make contact with Carol. When Carol gets angry at her, Zosia convulses. When she wakes up, Zosia tells Carol her outburst killed many around the world because they are affected by her negative emotions.

Carol demands to meet with the five other English speakers who are not assimilated. When Carol meets with them, she learns most are comfortable with how things are, and she also meets Koumba, who is using what’s happening to get everything he ever desired.

After learning that 886 million people died during the hive mind’s “Joining” on Earth, Carol is enraged again. Koumba tells Carol he is going to Las Vegas and wants to take Zosia with him, but needs Carol’s permission. Carol eventually agrees and runs out to stop his plane before it departs.
