Seven years before the Joining, Helen and Carol visit an ice hotel in Norway, and Carol finds it absolutely miserable even after learning her book made the top 20 of the bestseller list.
In the present, Carol learns about a Spanish speaker who has no interest in engaging with the hive mind, but he refuses to talk with Carol despite multiple attempts.
After the hive mind delivers a gift to Carol that Helen bought her before the joining, Carol demands that they forget about Helen and bring her a hand grenade. Carol then visits her local Sprouts, which has been emptied, but the hive mind replenishes it at Carol’s request.
Zosia delivers the hand grenade that night, and Carol activates it, not realizing that they would bring her a real grenade. Zosia is injured in the explosion and is taken to the hospital for recovery. While there, Carol speaks to another hive mind member, who tells her they would give her anything she asked for, even a nuclear weapon, though they might try and discourage her a bit on that one.
