Welcome to What’s the Buzz, where members of our staff provide you with recommendations on a weekly basis. This week, Jill Watson recommends I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Amber Welsh has been binge-watching Truth Be Told, Hawk Ripjaw finally checked out Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Jan Kalina has been listening to Taylor Swift’s folklore.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark

Jill: Unpacking the grief and trauma of a doting husband and young daughter’s loss of a mother, a powerhouse of an investigative journalist, and one hell of a nice lady would challenge any documentarian. Added to the potency and richness of Michelle McNamara’s story, both before and after her sudden death in 2016, Liz Garbus’ HBO documentary series I’ll Be Gone in the Dark rehashes the crimes of the Golden State Killer through the recollections of investigators, alongside powerful, non-exploitative portraits of his surviving victims and their families.

Garbus could not have woven this tapestry more respectfully or thoroughly. Too often, true crime television and film glamorize the perpetrator and overlook the aftermath and devastation wrought on the victims. I don’t think it’s that the people who make these programs don’t care, it’s that those are taboo subjects that make people uncomfortable, and if not done properly and with care, will make the viewer look away. Liz Garbus has an enormous, nebulous gift in using the language of film to do it exactly right.

McNamara’s friends, family, co-investigators, and the survivors all gave Garbus access and footage for her to piece it all together into something meaningful, insightful, and devastating in all the ways these stories demand and deserve.

Michelle McNamara’s obsession with true crime led her to write a true crime blog called True Crime Diary. She was active on armchair detective websites where amateur sleuths pool resources to solve crimes. Her passion and aptitude for investigation led investigators like Paul Holes to trust her and share case information with her. Her blog, which focused on crimes, and also included snippets of her personal life, caught the attention of publishers, and the book was greenlit.

When I say McNamara had an obsession, I don’t mean an intense interest. From her writings, her interviews, and testaments from family and friends, the unsolved case of the Golden State Killer, also known as the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker, consumed her. She couldn’t sleep without intense nightmares about the case. While her untimely and devastating death was not related directly to the case, the documentary lovingly shows that this was a woman on a heroic mission to help stop this man from hurting and killing anybody else.

After McNamara died, her torch was respectfully picked up by her husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, researcher Paul Haynes, and true crime writer Billy Jensen. Together they used McNamara’s research and contacts to complete her book, which was published in 2018.

The book was published February 27, 2018. April 24 of 2018, the Golden State Killer, whose name I won’t use because he doesn’t matter, was charged with 13 counts of murder. He is suspected of more than 50 rapes, with crimes spanning from 1973-1986.

I can’t recommend this documentary highly enough, and not just to true crime enthusiasts. It’s a compelling piece about how even through the worst of circumstances, collaboration and connection will get the best of us through, and the worst of us? They’ll be gone in the dark.

Truth Be Told

Amber: In a world where so many streaming services exist, it is easy to overlook excellent original content, which happened with Truth Be Told. When I last upgraded my iPhone a while ago, I was offered a free year of Apple TV. I was not interested in adding another service, free or not, so I just let it go. Apple did not let it go. I eventually accepted the offer and still managed to sleep on a handful of excellent original series. This is why it took me almost eight months to find Truth Be Told.

I love to binge-watch shows. If there were an Olympic medal for binge-watching shows, I would be a contender. Truth Be Told was one of the most delightful binge-watches in recent memory. Truth Be Told is a mystery based around a podcast that helped put away a teenage boy for the murder of his neighbor. We come in many, many years into Warren’s (the fantastic Aaron Paul) prison sentence, as a new piece of evidence has been discovered.

Poppy Scoville-Parnell, played by the equally amazing Octavia Spencer, starts to worry that her podcast helped put the wrong man away, and embarks on a journey of the conscience. Poppy is simply unable to live her life without knowing the truth, not only about this case but in any case she works—this sentiment kind of sums up Poppy as a whole.

On the surface, Truth Be Told seems like a pretty straightforward premise, but the show has a lot more in store for its viewers. There are so many facets to each character, and they are all examined in this eight-episode season. It never feels like too much is going on, but once you finish that last episode, you have learned so much about all of the characters. While presented with backstory on each person, mysteries continue to be presented and solved like a revolving door throughout the entire season.

What starts as a murder mystery quickly evolves into a multi-family drama, a look at what survival in prison entails, and just how impactful a mental illness can be on a community. Poppy is also forced to face her father with the information that she is helping a (now) white supremacist in possibly getting out of prison. There are layers upon layers of emotional weight in this show, and a lot of social commentary weaved in. I felt almost disoriented through the entire watch, as new information would be uncovered and switch the narrative on its head.

The main focus of Truth Be Told is finding out who really killed the neighbor, Chuck Buhrman, played by Nic Bishop, and why. The answers surrounding the murder opens a Pandora’s box of dysfunction, led by his twin daughters Josie and Lanie, both played by Lizzy Caplin. The clues often lead to more questions, and I can honestly say that the majority of my assumptions about what would happen ended up being incorrect.

It takes a lot to keep my attention these days, and in fact, the only two shows I have been able to really dig into are both Apple TV originals. This is not an advertisement because there is only one more show that I care to delve into before I run out of things that look interesting. Also, I have read some rather scathing reviews about Truth Be Told, which are likely just as valid as my praise for it, but the fact is that the show posses a talented and star-studded cast and it taps into that prevalent true crime genre.

I certainly am glad that I gave the show a chance, and if Apple keeps putting out this kind of original content, I might just have to keep it beyond the free trial. The fact that there are so many true crime shows and police procedurals out there that I cannot find engaging speaks to how well I feel Truth Be Told was done. It’s the little things keeping me sane right now, and this show just happens to make that list.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Hawk: Given the drought of theatrical movies available (for obvious reasons), I’ve had to plunge the depths of the streaming services to catch up on movies I haven’t seen but always intended to. The most recent film on offer was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The 2019 film is based on the books of the same name from ’80s, and if you read them, you may recall that some of them were significantly messed up, in a “gonna convince my mom to buy this book for me before she figures out the subject matter” kind of way. They were still children’s books, mind, but they definitely weren’t as benign as Goosebumps. This long-anticipated film, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Andre Oreval (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe), takes six of the originally unrelated stories and unites them under an overarching story. Here, a group of teens in the late ’60s come across a book written years ago by an abused teen. Like most books in films like these, it is very, very cursed.

The book somehow writes itself, each time involving the name of one of the main characters and spelling out the horror about to befall them. Said horror is, truth be told, surprisingly intense and visceral for a PG-13 horror movie aimed at younger teens. It’s not necessarily graphic, per se, but the fates of the doomed are far from pleasant. A bully gets stabbed with a pitchfork by a scarecrow before turning into a scarecrow himself, gagging and vomiting hay. A boil on a girl’s face turns out to be filled with thousands of spiders. Someone else is slowly absorbed into the body of a monstrous woman. Again, not much of this is actually graphic, but the implication of what’s happening is surprisingly grim.

In another pleasant surprise, the film follows a recently popular and effective brand of horror in which the scares are intrinsically interwoven with grief and pain. Main character Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) is still mourning the sudden departure of her mother, in addition to holding her father (Dean Norris) together as both of them grapple with the reason for her leaving them. The author of the book, Sarah Bellows, wrote the book out of the anguish stemming from her abuse. The stories are tailored to the individual pains and regrets of the starring characters, and seeing as this is the ’60s, racism is still heavily factored into the prominent cultural zeitgeist. It’s not a perfect film, but it ticks off a lot of boxes and is a very well-made, effective teen horror flick that keeps things relatively light on the jump scares and heavy on the tension and thematic weight.

Taylor Swift’s folklore is the Album You Secretly Didn’t Know You Wanted

Jan: Let’s get something straight, a’ight? folklore is the best album Taylor Swift has made so far. There I said it. Following Swift for years, I have never really been turned into much of a fan. Until this year’s documentary Miss Americana…when I became a fan. The documentary showed Taylor in a new light, as someone who fights for her rights for privacy, for her music and for homeland. And the behind the scenes showed that the acoustic version of the songs. When she is just sitting by the piano is when she is at her strongest as a musician. I asked for something simple that time…for her to sit down by the piano and record an album that way. Simple, pure, but more important genuine.

It took a lockdown and the world to stop for that to happen.

With every album Swift is growing up—as a person, and mainly as an artist, musician. folklore is the way American folk music will evolve. The whole album can be likened to those exaggerated tales of misfits, people on the edge, and outcasts akin to Bob Dylan characters. In “the last great american dynasty” Taylor starts telling the story of Rebekah Harkness, the mad woman that was attempted to be driven out of Rhode Island, and then the song ends with a verse where basically Taylor likens herself to Rebekah, as if she is proud of her haters and proud to be a mad woman. Oh yeah Taylor Swift owns the house Rebekah Harkness used to live in.

“exile (feat. Bon Iver)” is the obvious highlight of the entire album—again this feels Bob Dylan-esque, mixed in with the modern pop vibes. My favorite track from the album has got to be “my tears ricochet.” It’s a song of great pain, love, the loss of love and the consequent madness. It’s got a kick-ass melody.

Taylor Swift has solidified herself as an an American popstar but now she has proven herself as an amazing storyteller, worthy of listening to. ‘Cause she’ll tell us through quirky characters about the variety of emotions we all got in our arsenal.
