The following contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Premiere: S5E1 (“Morning”) & S5E2 (“Ballet”)

We left Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale in a spiral of cyclical aggression; a group of handmaids led by June (Elisabeth Moss), of course, had just murdered Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) in cold blood. Within a whirlwind of violent justice, the writers showed us how easy it is to find yourself passionately rooting for an aggressor; we saw the beginning of a real revolution.

Season 5 begins with the first two episodes released together, and we find June in the immediate aftermath of Fred’s murder. The opening scene is accompanied by the song ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream‘ by the Everly Brothers, as is the opening to the second episode. This is congruous with the bold and quirky music style that we have come to know and love from The Handmaid’s Tale. The colours are dark, June is covered in blood, and the camera angles are eerie and threatening… it is as if we never left.

June is fantasising about the events which have just taken place, and she seems at peace with her choices. Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) ambush her immediately for information, with Moira asking her whose blood she is covered in. June tells Moira that she has killed Fred, and drives off before either of them can stop her—straight into the action.

Moira, the voice of reason as ever, explains to Luke that Gilead would have killed Fred anyway, and that June just wanted to ‘do it herself with her own hands’. She tells June to her face that she is afraid of her and that she is uncomfortable with her caring for Nichole—‘you scare me’, she tells June. This is a heart-breaking turn for their friendship, but there is clearly and explicitly still a lot of love between them.

It is in S5E1 that June learns she will not face any punishment for her actions in the woods (save for an $88 fine for insecurely transporting a biological sample) as her actions did not take place in Canadian jurisdiction. Although she seems uncomfortable to be free, later gleefully telling Luke that she enjoyed killing Fred, there is evidence later on, especially in her bonding with Nichole, that she is starting to come around to her new life.

However, June has become indulgent and self-absorbed; she is obsessed with causing Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) harm. Yet when the handmaids who helped her kill Fred tell her that he was her monster and that now they want to hurt their own monsters she is reluctant. Perhaps she sees that she has started something she is unwilling to finish, perhaps she realises she is too exhausted for the enormity of what those others now wish for, or perhaps she is simply being selfish.

When June meets up with some of these women, Emily (Alexis Bledel) is not with them. After learning that she has returned to Gilead, June acknowledges responsibility for this, telling Sylvia (Clea DuVall) that it is her fault. Sylvia is incredible, very understanding but strong in her resolve not to forgive or forget. She is very mature and explains to June that she does not hate her and nor does she feel it is necessary to assign blame, she explains that she had more time than she ever thought she’d get with Emily, and is thankful for that. She makes it clear she never wants to see or hear from June again.

Everybody around June is trying to live a future-focused, normal, happy life; but June is in deep suffering. It is also clear that, as well as her unhealthy focus on Serena, June’s main grief is now focused on the loss of Hannah. She experiences painful flashbacks and talks with Luke who agrees that he can feel Hannah pulling him towards Gilead. June’s actions are very distressing to Luke, and he tells her, ‘June you gotta be right here’; the people around her, even those who were in Gilead, see the power of living in the present but unfortunately June is too traumatised.

We also catch up with some more of our old favourites: Janine (Madeline Brewer) is living under Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), as sweet and broken as ever. She has latched on to Ester (McKenna Grace), who is now a handmaid. Ester though is not sweet like Janine, she is dangerous and vengeful, like June. She chooses to poison Janine out of spite even though it means taking some of the poison herself, the only silver lining of which being that we see hints of Aunt Lydia genuinely caring for Janine as more than a slave. It is not revealed why Ester did this, but after being used to looking up to June—someone keen to break her out of the system, Janine’s advice to essentially ‘shut up and get pregnant’ likely hit a nerve. It is possible that Janine was only encouraging her into a posting with the Putnam’s so that she could visit the household where Angela, her child, lives.

We also catch up with Nick (Max Minghella), who is still in Gilead with his new wife. We expected him to be, but this is confirmed by the pair of handmaids walking down the street in their shocking red uniforms during his first scene. His new wife seems like a good fit, she makes him tea and he seems to confide in her, her telling him, “maybe June can find some peace now”. With this statement we know she is naïve and will be unable to match him in drive and intellect, but it is good to see Nick with someone who might be a real partner to him.

Rita is still living in Canada, friends with Moira and Luke. Like them, she is disturbed by June’s insistence to live in the past and obsess over her need for revenge against Serena. She tells June that she still struggles every day, despite not being a handmaid. June has been experiencing flashbacks herself and now inflicts these on Rita, dredging up memories that give her great pain. Both Rita and Moira are repulsed by some of the things June has said, and are both just trying to live their lives.

A newer character that has the potential to shake up this season is Mark (Sam Jaeger), the Canadian guard we met late in Season 4. He accompanies Serena throughout her visit to Gilead to arrange Fred’s funeral. She is very forceful both in Canada and in Gilead about the funeral being extravagant and exactly how she wants it. It seems initially that she is trying to claw back power and status, already calculating her next moves and how she can use Fred death to her advantage. It is only later that we see exactly how calculated she has been. She was very serene in her cell until the guards moved her to a more secure facility and tell her that Fred has been killed. She seems initially to be distressed by this, but already her focus has moved to action and it will be interesting to see how her feelings towards his death progress.

As she disembarks her plane and steps into Gilead the powerful Gilead music that brings dread to all viewers swells beneath the scene. She is met by Nick and Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), and it is a matter of satisfaction for viewers to know that both of these people are traitors. Serena is steely and goes on to threaten Joseph; already we see her harsh edges re-emerge from the grief that may or may not have been genuine. She seeks to claim power from the ‘tragedy’, but also revenge against the woman who killed her husband.

Joseph enjoys telling Serena that the funeral will be how they want it, not how Serena does. He seems to take pleasure in reminding her a woman’s word is worth very little in Gilead, the regime she helped found. After she blackmails him, he does however give in to her one key command—to invite families from further afield to attend the event and publicise the event in the international media. As it turns out, this was all she really wanted in the first place.

Mark’s involvement is very interesting. It is very clear that he will play a big role in this series and I am excited to learn all that that involves. When he visits June after learning what she did he does not scold her but instead congratulates her actions, ‘you did something terrible that needed to be done, may he rot in hell’, and he repeats to her the words that helped her survive, ‘don’t let the bastards grind you down’.

When he leaves Gilead, Mark tells Nick that he can help him. He seems to be proposing a life for him in Canada, if he co-operates with the Canadian government. Nick is a fantastic character so it is going to be very exciting to see where this goes, I for one would love to see him free and re-united with June and Nichole.

The end of S5E2 is truly breath-taking. June and Luke are outside in the street after dressing up and watching a ballet performance. This is June’s first proper taste of normalcy and she kisses Luke in the street. These scenes are stitched together with scenes of Serena dressed in a black dress and veil walking down the congregation at Fred’s funeral. The contrast of her in black and June in white is striking, and yet the similarities between the women are also on display. We are watching in parallel two powerful women re-claiming parts of their life that were taken from them. This scene is beautiful and artistic, but with an uneasy sense of foreboding. It almost carries a trace of humour in all its drama and is artistically provocative in its loud images and quiet emotions. But all traces of that humour are quickly wiped away.

Just as June immerses herself into her affection and love toward her husband, the couple realise the billboards on the street around them are broadcasting the funeral service. They see Serena stood before an angelic statue that appears to give her wings, and then things click into place.

It becomes clear that Serena orchestrated this event very carefully to ensure that, not only would she have whatever guests she wanted, but that the event would be broadcast all over Canada in real time.

And then it happens.

Clasping a bouquet and walking toward Serena with her back to the camera, a young girl gives flowers to the widow. As the girl turns, Hannah’s face is suddenly plastered over every billboard in the street. Serena kisses her meaningfully and smiles, with satisfaction. This is easily one of the most powerful scenes we have had throughout The Handmaid’s Tale. Serena using Hannah as the flower bearer at Fred’s funeral and kissing her face is surely the most cunning and painful retaliation Serena could have come up with. The moment is truly sickening.

The closing scene sees the women staring at each other—Serena looking down on June through the screens of a dozen billboards, and June glaring defiantly back.

Serena had at times shown glimmers of being redeemable, namely when she lost her finger in protest at Gilead’s rules about women and literacy, when she allowed Nichole the name her mother gave her, and in her discontent with Fred after the couple were apprehended. But she is now cemented as a villain for all to see.

So far, it seems this series will pip the last one to the pacing post. I remember feeling like things weren’t happening enough in Season 4, leading the drama to be more emotional than action. I enjoyed this for a while, but it is great to see the pace picked up to create a feeling of urgency again.

We have been set up for a fast-paced, emotional, vengeful season—one that gives us triumphs over Gilead, drama in Canada, and hopefully some wins against Serena Joy.
