Effy’s Big Gay Brunch 5: A Place For Wrestling Lovers

A delicious celebration of good eats and the LGBTQIA community of wrestling.

Disclaimer: My partner Maegan Rivera of Mama Rivera’s Catering was the caterer for the brunch portion of Effy’s Big Gay Bruch 5. Our relationship has no effect on the deliciousness of the food produced, which can be corroborated by many brunch consumers including Effy themself.

Effy’s Big Gay Brunch (EBGB) is a tradition unlike any other. The fifth iteration of the brunch was a huge success, as fans were delighted by the in-ring action and for the first time ever, actual food. On the same day as AEW’s All Out in Chicago, wrestling fans began their day with a celebration of good eats and the LGBTQIA community of wrestling.

In a time when professional wrestling is full of backstage drama and animosity, Effy cultivates a sense of community with loving acceptance and brunch goodies. The event’s menu included Daddy’s Peaches and Cream, a French toast bake with warm peach sauce, Eggy Is Fine, an egg frittata with fresh veggies and cheese, and BUSSY Biscuits, buttery and smothered with savory chorizo gravy.

In between big gay brunch bites, the fabulously-dressed crowd milled about the Grand Sports Arena, greeting friends and talent with warm embraces and smiles. Inside the ring, some of the most talented wrestlers in the world gave their best in fierce athletic competition.

Effy’s Big Gay Brunch show is run under the GCW promotion, one of the most popular and influential wrestling companies in the world. Known for its violent death matches and extreme risk-taking, there is a place for anyone that loves the art of wrestling. This includes the captain of the whole brunch brigade, Effy, who has grown into the main attraction and beloved figure of the ever-growing independent promotion.

More than just a “gay wrestler,” Effy gives meaning in whatever way you need him to. He is a leader, an inspiration, and an icon. He brings those around him closer, and embraces us all, just the way we are. During his main event match with Max the Impaler, an adoring crowd chanted chanted “whose brunch…Effy’s brunch” in a delightful twist of the Swerve Strickland call and response. It truly was Effy’s brunch, a collection of the best of wrestling’s thriving gay scene, all brought together by Daddy.

To gain a deeper understanding of the singular wonder known as Effy, I asked a variety of wrestlers and GCW personal one simple question: how would you describe Effy?

Speedball Mike Bailey: Effy is chaos….but Effy’s superpower is transforming chaos into something productive. You can tell that his mind goes so fast it’s hard for even him to control, but when he’s able to harness his own brain: genius comes out.

Cole Radrick: Egotistical, fantastic, fuck you. Effy. LOVE THAT GUY!

Devon Monroe: Is there even one word that can encapsulate? Why don’t I just say that Effy is everything.

Allie Katch: Effy is literally what he eats. He’s something savory, and he’s something sweet, and he always orders too much. But he does what he wants and he eats what he wants and that’s Effy.

J-Rose: Have you ever been in the business world or parodies on TV, and the people who do self-help and the microphone is tethered to their ear? They’re like “you can achieve whatever you want to be.” Okay so take that person and put them in the video game sliders and bring the violence slider all the way up to 100, that’s Effy. He is a gay televangelist, a gay bloody televangelist.

MSP (Danger Kid & Aiden Aggro): Daddddy. Yeah, he’s Daddy! Daddy to us all. He’s our daddy. I hope he’s everybody’s daddy. He is everybody’s daddy, what are you even questioning it for? I shouldn’t have, stifle me. He is, he’ll deal with you later, ’cause that’s what he does. Effy super-cedes time, and he’ll be Daddy forever.

Emil Jay: Effy is an enigma in itself. I don’t want to himself, because Effy is more than him/her/he/she, all of the above, Effy is all-in-one, one-in-all. He lives in time and space, he conquers it all. He can melt steel beams if he wanted to, he can do it all.

Referee Dan Perch: One of a kind, simply one of a kind. One of the greatest wrestling presences I’ve been around, and one of the greatest spiritual leaders. Waving the flag for professional wrestling and the passions that we all share. As fans, as wrestlers, as referees, Effy really represents professional wrestling and is a true great.

The appreciation and love for Effy are clearly shown by those around him and are mutual from Daddy. Effy relentlessly promotes a message of love, but it never feels fake or lackluster. He instead speaks of vibrant love. Effy has a love for anyone that loves him back and declares it as loud as possible into the vaunted microphone of professional wrestling.

Effy’s Big Gay Brunch 5 Results

The display of in-ring action, introduced by the amazing Val Capone and J-Rose, was hot and heavy all late morning to mid-afternoon long. Here are the results.

Devon Monroe vs. Jai Vidal

The first course of match action featured an exciting contest between two young and rising competitors. The quick pacing of this match was excellent, and the crowd was into it. In the end, Monroe was able to slam Vidal face-first to pick up the win.

Edith Surreal vs. Jordan Blade

In this six-round, two out of three falls contest, these two submission specialists looked to prove who was the best. The two traded falls until a draw was called. Both fighters agreed to an additional round, which also ended in a draw. Fans will no doubt like to see a definitive winner in a future contest, maybe at Effy’s Big Gay Brunch 6.

Gayest Tag Gaynlent Match

Five of the gayest tag teams on the independent circuit battled it out for supremacy in this exhilarating gauntlet match. The majestic team of The McQueens (Eddy McQueen and Dillon McQueen) was able to withstand Mateo Valentine and Joey Mayberry, The Runway (Calvin Couture and Tyler Klein), Money Power Respect (Fabuloso Fabricio & Marco Mayur) to meet MSP (Aiden Aggro and DangerKid) in the finals. The McQueens beat MSP, who are one of the most decorated tag teams in all of indie wrestling, to secure a statement victory.

Sandra Moone vs. Ashton Starr

These two future superstars put on a great show in this match. Starr feigned a foot injury to gain an advantage and flipped the crowd the bird when the deceit was revealed to huge boos. After an exchange of fists and feet, Starr landed a big kick to Moone’s head for the win.

Scramble Match

A staple match type of GCW, this scramble was tons of fun. The unique and talented group of Uncle Chase Burnett, Da Shade, Armani Kayos, Jeyla Jay, Moondog Murray, and Aaron Rourke provided fans with fast and furious action. Uncle Chase did his best throughout the contest but wasn’t able to withstand the powerful slam from Jay, who picked up the scramble win.

Kidd Bandit vs. Parrow

The protagonist of professional wrestling Kidd Bandit certainly had a challenge in the form of the Titan-like Parrow. Bandit fought with everything they had, including kendo sticks, but the monstrous power of Parrow was too much. The strength and savagery of Parrow was on full display, tossing Bandit deep into the crowd seats, and even going so far as to put hands on brunch host Pollo Del Mar. After repeatedly slamming Bandit into a pile of chairs, Parrow picked up a dominant win.

Allie Katch vs. Dark Sheik vs. Taya Valkyrie

One of the most exciting matches of the day was between three of the most prominent stars in all of wrestling. An especially entertaining sequence of this match involved the three competitors using a staple gun, introduced to the match by Allie Katch, to shoot staples in each other faces and rear-ends. More plunder would be used in the match, as Katch would spear Valkyrie through a table in the corner. The High Priestess of Wrestling Dark Sheik eventually picked up a big win in this terrific three-way contest.

Effy vs. Max The Impaler

In the main event, Daddy Effy withstood the brutality of Max The Impaler, who looked to smash Effy into pieces. Undaunted in their quest for victory, Effy went the road of high-risk and good ol’ fashioned cheating for the win. First by choke-slamming The Impaler off a ladder, and then using the ropes for extra leverage in the final pin, Effy was able to win the main event of his Big Gay Brunch 5.

After the match, Effy delivered a fiery promo about his appreciation and love for the community that made Effy’s Big Gay Brunch 5 so successful. The crowd ate Daddy’s speech up with gleeful cheers, as Effy declared that professional wrestling does not belong to anyone, it has plenty of space for everyone, no matter how different they are. This message of acceptance is what makes Effy and his Big Gay Brunch so special for so many. The talent and fans felt comfortable being who they are, loving who they love, cheering, and booing their heroes and villains altogether. If that’s not pure and real pro wrestling, I don’t know what is.
