A Teacher, Sawayama, and Cobra Kai Season 3!

Cobra Kai Season 3 Trailer

Brien: This week, Netflix finally (finally!) released both some first look photos and an official Season 3 trailer for Cobra Kai. Season 3 airs on January 8th, so we’re just one month away. Fans are going bananas over the trailer.

If you somehow do not know about this show, let me give you a little background. Cobra Kai picks up the story from the original Karate Kid movies, now set some 30+ years later. Johnny Lawrence, the original “villain” of The Karate Kid, is now the hero—or maybe rather the anti-hero. Life did not turn out so good for Johnny, and Season 1 starts out with him at a particular low point in his life. A neighboring kid in his apartment building inspires him to bring back Cobra Kai karate and begin teaching. Daniel LaRusso, now a successful car dealer, finds out and resurrects Miyagi-do karate. The two dojos are pitted against each other once again in the All Valley tournament. Season 2 brings back the original Cobra Kai sensei, John Kreese, who takes over Cobra Kai and ultimately instigates an enormous karate brawl at the high school that ends up with Johnny’s star pupil severely injured and hospitalized.

The first two seasons aired on the YouTube Premium streaming service. Season 3 was slated for release on YouTube as well, but in May 2020 it was announced that it would be moving to Netflix. This began the long wait for fans. With the series most likely complete and sitting on the shelf, new owner Netflix wanted some time to air the original seasons themselves and drum up interest. Through September and into October, Cobra Kai has consistently been in the top ten streaming series on Netflix, in both the US market and many other markets worldwide. No doubt it has been well worth whatever they paid for it.

So, back to the trailer. Let’s talk details for those of us who are already fans.

  • Johnny is coaching Miguel through his recovery, and takes him in a wheelchair to a Dee Snyder concert (did you catch the girl in the Devo t-shirt behind them?)
  • Robby is arrested (at the Miyagi-do dojo?) and in juvie, visited by both Johnny and Kreese
  • Robby also gets beat up in juvie (has he sworn off fighting after what he did to Miguel?)
  • Kyler is back and joining Cobra Kai, possibly traumatizing Hawk
  • Sam is still having Tory problems, and maybe being coached by her father to go on the offensive
  • Demetri seems to be picking on Hawk at school
  • Johnny and Daniel team up to investigate something (ah, that Tango and Cash line, perfection)
  • There are weapons in both dojos now
  • Miguel is doing keg curls while Johnny is trying to fill his beer from that same keg
  • Both Daniel’s love interest (Kumiko) and his nemesis (Chozen) from The Karate Kid 2 make an appearance

And best of all, no Stingray!

If you haven’t watched it before, now is your chance to catch up. If you have watched it, it’s well worth watching again to get ready. Cobra Kai is back, baby! No mercy!
