Welcome to What’s the Buzz, where members of our staff provide you with recommendations on a weekly basis. This week, Derrick Gravener recommends Mare of Easttown (premiering on HBO April 18), Hannah Searson is listening to Fearless (Taylor’s Version), and Hal Kitchen suggests you watch Sound of Metal already.

Mare of Easttown

Derrick: HBO launches its next foray into mystery-miniseries starring a mega actor with Mare of Easttown on April 18. It’s a title that needs to be typed out and not really said aloud, as people may think you’re referring to a show about a mayor. But rest assured Mare is the title character of this brooding murder mystery starring Emmy and Academy Award winner (and donut-in-my-hometown-eater) Kate Winslet.

As Mare, Kate Winslet sinks her teeth into a Philly accent, a small town community of residents, and a curmudgeonly attitude which makes her both a great and a terrible detective sergeant.

Like Manchester by the Sea meets Sharp Objects, between moments of witty dialogue, and quiet character building/family drama moments, there’s a darkness hidden in this town (and its protagonist) that’s starting to show its face in the disappearance of young women.

With a supporting cast featuring American Horror Story veteran Evan Peters, The Outsider’s Julianne Nicholson, Kate’s Mildred Pierce co-star Guy Pearce, and the legendary Jean Smart, Mare of Easttown is filled with characters that taunt and also support Mare’s self-destructive and yet coldly, caring ways.

You may be like me and initially only come for the Kate Winslet performance, but the mystery presented, and all the individual characters along the way each adds up to something that feels more like an ensemble piece than I was initially intending this to feel like.

Catch Katie Bienvenue’s coverage on 25YL starting this Sunday (April 18) as she gives you an in-depth look into what’s happening in Easttown, just who Mare “Lady Hawk” Sheehan actually is, and what secrets she might be hiding, too.
