Welcome to What’s the Buzz, where members of our staff provide you with recommendations on a weekly basis. This week, Julia Mason is listening to Green Day’s “Here Comes the Shock,” Robert Chipman found some good stuff at the Goodwill, and Will Johnson revisits Edgar Wright’s 2007 film Hot Fuzz.
Green Day “Here Comes the Shock”
Julia: In February 2020 Green Day released their 13th studio album Father of All… It turned out to be a very unlucky number as the subsequent tour was obviously postponed and they are yet to play it live. Undeterred the trio, comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool, have been writing a lot of new music in recent months and premiered new track “Here Comes the Shock” during the NHL’s Outdoor Games at Lake Tahoe on 20 February 2020.
In the accompanying video, Green Day teamed up with Punk Rock Aerobics co-founder Hilken Mancini, who created a two-and-a-half-minute routine filled with air guitars, skanks, and circle-running, especially for the track. As they described it in the song’s caption on YouTube: “Time to break a sweat with Punk Rock Aerobics in the video for ‘Here Comes The Shock.’”
“Here Comes The Shock” is a two-and-a-half-minute blast—a frantic, fast, adrenaline-fuelled song. Yes, it is what we expect of Green Day, but I don’t think any less of it for that. They have always been tongue-in-cheek with a punk ethic that will never die. Armstrong has admitted that a lot of the new music he is writing is more self-deprecating and funny, which sounds pretty awesome to me in these troubled times.
“Here Comes The Shock” is exactly what we need to produce those happy endorphins as we continue to dance in our kitchens for now.
