On Winning Time Season 2 Episode 6, “Beat LA”
The Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1982 NBA finals, but wound up getting swept by the 76ers the following year. (Malone: “Fo, fo, fo”). The disappointing finish to the 1983 season left the Lakers doing some team evaluating, which led to Norm Nixon being traded from the team (getting Byron Scott). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had a change of heart about his desire to leave Los Angeles after a fire burns down his home. Also, Jerry Buss and his marriage to Honey is a mess with her leaving and filing a $100 million lawsuit against him. Lakers get their wish after a tumultuous 1983-84 season and will get their first matchup with the Celtics in the 1984 finals.
- Caemeron was right about the show speed-racing basketball stuff to get to 1984
- Norm Nixon was indeed traded the day before his birthday, and is married to Debbie Allen to this day
- Timeline is off with regard to Cookie & Magic and also Kareem’s house fire
- Honey doesn’t exist but seems based on two women who do: Veronica and Puppi Buss
- Thoughts on the structure of this episode and how it sets up the season finale
- James Worthy and Byron Scott are not really characters yet, and neither are the Sixers
- Jeanie Buss joins Jeff Pearlman in plugging the show on social media
- Tell your friends to watch Winning Time and let’s make sure we get a Season 3!
