Hey everybody, it’s Caemeron Crain here, Executive Editor of TV Obsessive. Happy New Year! And a new year means new TV. The schedule of premieres might be a little lighter in January 2024 than we’d previously hoped, as many series were delayed in their production (for good reasons), but there’s still a lot of stuff to look forward to.

As always, note that the following list is not an attempt to be comprehensive when it comes to upcoming new and returning TV series, but rather curated in terms of our collective taste. Or, in the case of this list, I guess it’s my taste.

These are the things I think might be worth watching this month, with little blurbs as to why. Please let us know in the comments if there are things you’re looking forward to that aren’t on this list. I may have missed something!

Let’s get to it.

January 9: Echo, Disney+

Echo will be the first Marvel show on Disney+ to have received a TV-MA rating, and promises to return us to smaller stakes stories as it kicks of the Marvel Spotlight series. There are clear resonances with shows like Daredevil in the idea of this, and that’s further bolstered by Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox being on the cast list for this series, reprising their roles are Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock.

The show is set to pick up after the events of Hawkeye, with Alaqua Cox returning to the role of Echo. I’m sure if you’re into this stuff you know all of this already.

January 10: Criminal Record, Apple TV+

This one is a crime thriller starring Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo. I don’t know about you, but that’s enough to intrigue me.

January 14: True Detective Season 4 (aka True Detective: Night Country)

True Detective is back! This season stars Jodie Foster and is directed by Issa López.

January 16: Death and Other Details, Hulu

Billed as a locked-room murder mystery, this one stars Mandy Patinkin.

January 19: The Woman in the Wall, Paramount+

The Woman in the Wall aired on BBC One last year, so maybe ask your British friends if it’s good. Regardless, the psychological thriller starring Ruth Wilson comes to Paramount+ in the US this month.

If you’re intrigued by this genre, you might also enjoy exploring some of the top psychological horror movies that have captivated audiences over the years.

January 25: Sexy Beast, Paramount+

I saw Sexy Beast when it came out in 2000 and it proceeded to lodge itself in my brain in a way that’s never diminished. Now they’re making a prequel to the cult crime thriller, which I can’t at all say is something that I think it is necessary to do. But, I’m intrigued anyway. I’ll be checking this one out, and probably writing something on it later this month.

January 26: Expats, Prime Video

Nicole Kidman headlines this adaptation of the 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, created by Lulu Wang.

January 26: Masters of the Air, Apple TV+

If I’m honest, I personally am not super interested in a series about men in the US Air Force fighting the Nazis, which is what this is, but there are some really good people associated with Masters of the Air. It will probably be good, if this sort of thing is your cup of tea.

That’s all I have for you this month! Again, if there’s anything you’re looking forward to that I haven’t mentioned, let us know in the comments!
